Modding a $40K Vehicle vs. a $4K Vehicle: Lessons Learned from my Nissan Xterra
Переглядів 298День тому
Have you ever thought about the perfect way to mod your truck? A big part of deciding what makes sense is based on how much the truck is worth and how long you intend to keep it. In this video, I reflect on some lessons learned on my Nissan Xterra and talk about what I plan to do differently on the Toyota Tacoma.

Having a no start - no crank situation on your 00-04 Nissan Xterra? Before spending money on a battery, starter, and other electrical parts...you can test this with 3 inches of wire and a couple of spade terminals. If you have a first gen Nissan Xterra, you may run into a no-start-no-crank situation. Many things are in the start circuit that can cause this...but a quick check can possibly get you going again! The Park-Neutral switch is a switch that only lets you crank the engine if the gear selector is in Park or Neutral. Before digging into invasive diagnostics...try cycling the gear selector a few time...

    • @XterraRob
      @XterraRob 5 днів тому

      Do you mean portal axles meaning a drop gear box at the wheel hub?

    • @kyleallred984
      @kyleallred984 5 днів тому

      Correct. From what I understand they require less modifying of the vehicle to achieve an equivalent lift.

    • @XterraRob
      @XterraRob 5 днів тому

      @@kyleallred984 I don't have much experience with them personally other than reading and see them online. They are not that common because they are expensive. A quick google shows a 5 inch portal lift for a Tacoma at $16,000 dollars and none exist for the Xterra that I am aware of. If there is not a bolt on kit already designed, then you are doing a lot of custom fabrication to mate up the axle shafts and hub flanges, etc. If you have endless money and want to build a dedicated extreme trail rig, then it may make sense. I have seen them more often used with 4 wheelers and side by sides where the vehicle itself is small, and the suspension geometry doesn't allow for much lift.

    Would it be possible to add a turbo and snorkel to a 2000 Xterra xe v6 for increased towing power and safer fun?

    • @XterraRob
      @XterraRob 7 днів тому

      Possible? Sure, once you can cut and weld metal back together...anything is possible. But there isn't a dedicated turbo kit that is drop in. There was a version of the first gen xterra that had a super charger, but that requires a junk yard donor vehicle to scavenge the super charger, intake manifold, throttle body, cables, etc. Snorkels are definitely possible. Check out 4x4parts.com and see what you like.

    Things I love that I did to my 03' Xterra: 1. upgrading from an XE to an SE/SC 2. Coastal Offroad DIY bumpers. 3. Snorkel 4. 32" tires 4. Lift 5. Headliner

    • @XterraRob
      @XterraRob 10 днів тому

      Great list...super charger conversion is awesome! I have been eying coastal offroad DIY kits for a while but never went that route. I liked the concept because I can weld the stuff up, but hand cutting plates with an angle grinder and smoothing out edges is so tedious and messy, plus without tube benders, you are kind of locked in to very boxy geometry. How did you do your headliner? I tried some fabric at first, but the glue all fell down sitting in the parking lot at work during the hot summer months. I ended up taking it out and spray painting. I wasn't too happy with how it turned out, but it never sagged again!

    Do you think converting an N/A gen 1 2004 into a supercharged one is worth the hassle? I have an opened up engine (no telling what was done to it but everything is painted silver so it has been out) original 140k miles, XE 5 speed 4wd, I dont know if the supercharger will be worth it but on 32's (Yoko Geo X-AT) I need to kind of rev it up before I let the clutch out otherwise it tries to bog. It had no power down low but its also running kind of rough so Im doing a tune up as soon as it cools down. If I were to go through with it, what all would I need? So far I know the supercharger, intake plenum adapter, belt brackets but beyond that Im not too sure. Do I need a VG33ER ECU like Ive heard? And do I need to use a Z32 MAF, or will the stock MAF hold up. Thank you for all the help you provide

      I think It's worth the hassle if: 1) you get recreational value out of a big project like this and 2) you have the money, time, and space to sink into an old truck. By any objective measure of value...nah not worth it when you start calculating dollars spent to get some better performance. But if it is fun...

    Great mechanical talents! i will take look at my 94 ES300 V6 3.0, ALSO P1300, adding a new air filter got rid of stall but now hesitates bogs down when i accelerate, also have the shift solenoid A electrical P0753 code for months. 1 hr low speed and idle test in my cul de sac to make sure stall was gone may have activated the p1300 code. I will see if does better today without extended idle, this 94 only has 47K miles on it, Calif car, so hopefully it has lots of miles left on it, i was amazed that putting s new Denso Toyota air filter appeared to solve the stall, Also the only issue with the shift solenoid code is it doesn't take off quickly in drive at a stop light so I just shift to low manually and go up through second to drive I hope that's not detrimental to the transmission? I could find Somebody to maybe replace that solenoid, all the tranny fluids new I even pumped it out of the torque converter via the transmission cooler line The tranny filter hasn't been changed so that probably wouldn't hurt

    P1300 is more than just the ignition coil!! And anytime you have multiple codes like thatP1300 does not mean a bad ignition coil. It means the circuit, which means anything on that circuit including the coil, wiring, & ecm. Don’t just jump off and throw parts at it (replacing the coil), diagnose it!! Yours may have just been a coil, but that may not be the case for everyone else, so this is misleading!!!

    • @XterraRob
      @XterraRob Місяць тому

      Understood. The ECU triggers the code but it doesn't know if an open/short circuit is in the coil itself, wire harness or the connectors, or an unexpected resistance or voltage drop due to corrosion. In my case I swapped coils from one cylinder to the next and cleared codes. The new code triggered matched the cylinder that I swapped the coil into so I felt pretty sure the coils were the problem.

    I just completed this job on my 2000 Nissan Quest. I replaced all of my injectors, valve cover gaskets, plenum gasket and PCV valve. My recommendation is to take lots of photos and videos with your phone as u disassemble. In total, I had more than 50 photos and videos and w/o them I never would have gotten this together again. Also make notes on the sequence of removal. In total, this job took me more than a week but some time was lost waiting for parts to arrive.

      Low on refrigerant due to leaking hoses. The system has pressure switches that turn the clutch on the compressor off if the system is outside of normal operating range

    140,000 on my 1 gen Xterra se 4x4 and in excellent shape ! wont be selling her anytime soon ! one of the most reliable vehicles I have ever owned and funniest 4x4s with very little maintenance needed. Would never spent 40 - 50,000 on a new rig waste of money and dont want payments, that money better off going into my investments. For the money spent on a new rig you can completely rebuild a new gen 1 xterra 3 times ! but I understand the draw to something new fun and exciting. Cheers !

    Dammit, now I'm scared to start this process. Just finished my full suspension lift, HD steering assembly, and complete front brake kit last weekend. Last on the list is the diff drop and s/c radiator upgrade. 4x4parts UCA bushing were tough enough...now I hear the diff bushings are worse?? Shiiiiy

      Nope...just one day a no start no crank issue spent all day testing battery, jump starting, replacing battery cable and clamps, cleaning up grounds etc. Took hours to find this one oddly specific thing.

    I can understand doing the bypass mod for the intake stuff... however those of us that live in places that get cold in the winter probably should leave them intact. I just ordered a pack of high performance silicone coolant hoses for my pathfinder as I've had to remove the intake once before to address a coolant hose with a pinhole. The silicone hoses will definitely inspire more confidence than those 29+ year old hoses that still remain! Now if only I could find a straight answer on the hex wrench sizing needed to remove the upper intake. Last time a buddy brought his allen sockets by and helped me do it however after ordering a set of them recently I discovered the 5.5mm is too small and the 6mm is a bit too large! Might have just been some rust in there when I tried to test fit the tool the other day... I'm gonna find out this coming weekend in any case.
